CAUSES
The most common type, maxillary sinusitis, is followed in frequency by ethmoid, frontal, and
sphenoid sinusitis. A viral
infection of the upper respiratory tract is the most common precursor of sinusitis, Infection due to bacteria,fungal
are also present.
Upper respiratory track infection, Nasal ,polyps,Allergy predisposes
to the infection to sinuses. Climatic factors like sudden temperature changes, pollutants
and Swimming in infected water and Traveling by aircraft during upper
respiration infection are also causes .Low immunity and Tonsillitis is also one
of the commonest cause.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of acute sinusitis
include purulent nasal or postnasal drainage, nasal congestion, and sinus pain
or pressure whose location depends on the sinus involved. Maxillary sinus pain
is often perceived as being located in the cheek or upper teeth; ethmoid sinus
pain, between the eyes or retroorbital; frontal sinus pain, above the eyebrow;
and sphenoid sinus pain, in the upper half of the face or retroorbital with
radiation to the occiput. Sinus
pain is frequently worse when the patient bends over or is supine. Fever
develops in about half of patients with acute maxillary sinusitis.
MANAGEMENT
- Steam inhalations is of a greater advantage than any other medicine.
- Avoid cold food & cold drinks.
- Avoid foods which have preservatives & are artificially coloured & flavoured.
- Avoid smoking and avoid other environmental pollution if possible.
- Avoid swimming at unknown places where chances of contamination are more.
- Avoid air travel during upper respiration infection.
